The Vegan Foodie's Guide to Croatia

I must admit, Croatia is more vegetarian-friendly than vegan-friendly. There are cities where vegan options are quite rare, like Dubrovnik, and others like Zagreb where it’s very easy to eat vegan! In the end, I still ate really well on this trip.

Dubrovnik

Nishta

The only vegan restaurant in Dubrovnik, and I definitely recommend going there to try Ćevapčići, a traditional Croatian dish, which is minced meat served on flatbread with raw onion slices on the side.

Silk Street Food

This is a chain of Thai restaurants in Croatia. They have several vegan options, including the tofu curry, which was de-li-cious, and the kimchi fried rice.

Hvar Island

Kebab Factory

This kebab restaurant in the town of Hvar offers a delicious seitan kebab. It’s incredible! Do not miss it!

Vintage Bar

This restaurant in the old town of Hvar offers several vegan options, including Bao Buns, which were delicious, and vegan dumplings. I don’t recommend the dumplings as they stuck to the paper and fell apart. However, they’re other vegan options we didn’t try, so I would still recommend this place for vegan dining.

Coffee Kojo

We had the best sandwiches of the trip (and maybe even of our lives!) at this family café in Stari Grad. The avocado and hummus sandwich is to die for, yum!

Split

Barakokula

This vegan restaurant was my favorite in Split. Located in a cute and intimate alley of the old town, the mushroom & truffle pasta was excellent, as was the fish-style tofu, which impressed me with its texture.

To Je Tako

A delicious Mexican restaurant in the heart of Split's old town. We tried the typical vegan bowl and the chickpea & cauliflower tacos, and it was excellent. I highly recommend!

Pandora Greenbox

We enjoyed this vegan restaurant located in Split's old town. The menu mainly features pasta, so it’s perfect if you have a pasta craving! We tried the pasta and gnocchi dishes, and we recommend both. However, I wasn’t impressed with the brownie.

Veg

We had lunch at this restaurant in Split and shared two wraps. I particularly recommend the chili sin carne, yum!

Kitchen Bar Garden

For lunch, we stopped at this restaurant that offered (as the only vegan option) a burger. It was very good, but they only accept cash, so be sure to plan for that!

Zagreb

Zrno Bio Bistro

We loved this organic and vegan restaurant in Zagreb. I particularly recommend having the ‘Three Spreads’ and the Seitan Cordon Bleu, which are seitan rolls with a smoked tofu and dried tomato filling. It was absolutely delicious!

Oaza Joyful Kitchen

The first restaurant offering vegan kebabs in Croatia, and we were not disappointed! Both the kebab and the burger were excellent!

*100% vegan restaurant

Br00m44

We had brunch at this restaurant, and I think it’s my favorite meal of the entire trip! The menu is vegetarian, but they have several vegan options like the flatbread with mushrooms and the Yakitori Pumpkin. Yum!

Around Croatia

Bio & bio

This organic grocery store saved us several times during the trip: a homemade dinner of vegan bolognese pasta, a pre-hike breakfast for Plitvice Lakes, a lunch for our hike that same day, and another for the airport. Their sandwiches come from Zrno Bio Bistro, a restaurant in Zagreb that we were lucky to try later in the trip. The sandwiches I recommend are the scrambled tofu wrap, the hummus sandwich, and the BBQ seitan sandwich. I’d suggest pairing their sandwiches with vegan mayo, as they’re a bit dry otherwise.
